Basic Assessment Training and Application

The BBKA Examination Board is responsible for setting written and practical examinations in support of the BBKA’s desire to educate and set standards for beekeepers.

The starting point and entry requirement for all other examinations and assessments is the Basic Assessment in Beekeeping; this practical assessment tests the basic skills and knowledge of the craft.

The assessment is completely practical/oral, and usually takes place at the JG Graves Woodland Discovery Centre, Abbey Lane Sheffield, S7 2QZ, and is conducted by a BBKA Assessor.

It is open to all who have managed at least one colony of bees for a minimum of 12 months. The 12 month period must be completed by 31 August each year.

The entrance fee is £45.00, subsidised by us in the sum of £20, so £25 cost per SBKA member. If you are interested, please email nicky@sheffieldbeekeepers.org.uk and we will keep you up to date.

We have yet to set a date for the 2025 basic assessments but we are currently looking at late July or early August.
